Our team constructing the Mercedes-Benz Brisbane Autohaus is one of the first in Australia to manage a project’s schedule in a real-time 4D virtual environment, using Building Information Modelling software to enhance how we operate. 

Planning & Program Manager, Chris Pilcher, discusses technological innovation on the project.

“I can be sitting at my desk in Regional HQ in Brisbane, and an engineer at the Autohaus site can record on their iPad what has happened on the site that day, and this information will be added into the master 4D schedule on my desktop instantly. I can then use this data to assess and report on progress and work collaboratively with the site team.

We are using Building Information Modelling (BIM) to enhance how we operate. In this way, 4D scheduling creates better engagement with our customers in the planning process and increases ownership of the program. 

We can undertake planning in 4D by adding time to a 3D model to create more effective schedules.  We are able to rehearse the construction process on a desktop, eliminating mistakes in the field. It’s also important that the information trail is auditable and photos can be added. This is all part of our commitment to continually innovate to deliver better project outcomes for our clients and their customers

We have created a real-time virtual environment that allows the site team to view the 4D schedule, without having to dust off their boots. They can tell the planner responsible for the project about the status of any given item via a pre-selected colour-coded status. For example, a concrete slab:

  • Red – formed
  • Orange – reinforcement placed
  • Yellow – services placed
  • Blue – poured

The colour of the model element selected by the team in the field appears instantly in the 4D schedule (i.e. my desk in head office) and allows the planner to update his/her schedule accurately.”
