We provide a range of signalling and communications design and project management services for heavy and light rail segments. Harnessing proven specialist signalling skills, technology and strategic partnerships we are able to project manage, procure, construct, test and commission signalling and communication infrastructure. 

Our installation and commissioning expertise is product agnostic and includes signalling interlocking, signalling wayside equipment, signal control systems, passenger information and communication control systems and training. We work in partnerships with technology partners to provide solutions tailored to meet the needs of our customer’s infrastructure. 

We have completed extensive signalling for Liverpool Turn-back Project, the Glenfield to Leppington Rail Link, Regional Rail Link Packages A & B and the Sydney Light Rail projects.



Our in-house overhead wiring (OHW) systems expertise includes the ability to design manage, install, test and commission. 

This extensive pool of knowledge and experience includes traction system upgrades, traction system relocations associated with track renewals, greenfield and brownfield installation of new traction infrastructure, power upgrades, substation construction and terminations from HV feeders to substation equipment racks. 

Our OHW team provided new construction on Glenfield to Leppington Rail Link, North Strathfield Rail Underpass, Sydney Light Rail, Regional Rail Link Packages A & B and Perth City link.



John Holland is a private rail operator running the Country Regional Network (CRN) in NSW, as a shareholder in the Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) network in the franchise with Public Transport Victoria and as a shareholder in North West Rail Link (NWRL) Sydney. 

This includes being a Rail Infrastructure Manager (RIM) and Authorised Engineering Organisation (AEO), and experience in train operations, train planning and pathing, network access management and vertically integrated rail transport operations. 

We have implemented a national competency management system tailored to the railway operations and maintenance environment, in collaboration with customers and other RIM’s. This management system places us at the forefront of the railway industry in terms of understanding railway infrastructure and competency requirements. Our experienced staff and sophisticated management systems reassure customers about the delivery of their own safety obligations, and provide increased rigour to internal rail safety performance of railway infrastructure.



We are in the unique position of being able to offer customers the full a range of rail services including train operations. The entry of John Holland into the operation of freight trains has been a natural progression from many years of use of construction trains and moving major track mounted maintenance plant around Australia. 

Our freight and haulage operation continues to expand into other market sectors where John Holland’s unique position as both network and rolling stock operator offering is leveraged to client advantage. 

In addition to operating construction and maintenance work trains in the Pilbara, John Holland has gained a variation to its own accreditation to operate diesel locomotives and freight wagons in NSW.
