Great Northern Highway Realignment
John Holland delivered the Great Northern Highway Realignment project in partnership with Main Roads Western Australia. Construction commenced in late 2012 and the new alignment opened to traffic in June 2014.
The project has improved road safety by separating heavy and light vehicles, reducing road train incidents with local traffic, improving access to new port and harbour areas, and improving traffic flow between Port and South Hedland.
The project delivered approximately 8 kilometres of new road; a major interchange at the Broome turn-off, enabling uninterrupted flow for local traffic over Great Northern Highway; new at-grade intersection with Utah Point Road to provide access to the western port area; new link to South Hedland (Hamilton Road); and a new road bridge over the BHP rail line. In mid-2013, at the request of the Town of Port Hedland, the new Wallwork Road Bridge was added to the scope of work and opened in May 2014.
